Mustangs add former Bombers goalie

The Ogden Mustangs have added goaltender Matthew Genter for the 2019-20 season.

Genter is coming off of his first season of junior hockey, playing for his hometown Long Beach Bombers. He put up solid numbers, backing up longtime Bomber stalwart Domenic Bosetti. Genter was 12-2 last season with a 2.87 goals against average and .900 save percentage. He had multiple showings with 30+ saves. His season-high was a 43-save effort against the San Diego Sabers in a late-season 6-3 victory.

You may remember that Long Beach made the trip to Ogden last season, in what turned out to be a very tight, highly-entertaining series in mid February. Genter didn’t start any of those games, but his first trip to Ogden made an impression. He returned again to Ogden for the Thorne Cup Finals.

“With the rink and staff and how the atmosphere felt, there’s no question it’s a nice, friendly place and a well-run program,” Genter said. “The Mustangs were the team to beat last season, with a good record and a better team. With the outstanding performance last season I see no reason to not uphold that reputation this season.”

Genter stands at 6-feet and 173 pounds. He’s from Westminster, California. Born in 2001, he’ll have two more seasons of junior hockey eligibility remaining after this one.

A fundamentally-sound goaltender, Genter describes his goaltending style as technical, with the ability to be aggressive and athletic when needed.

“I feel better than ever coming into my second year of juniors,” Genter said. “Putting in plenty of work this summer, I expect myself to raise the bar this year even higher.”

Genter is the 19th player announced so far on the Mustangs’ 2019-20 roster. He’s the 11th new addition to go along with eight returners from last season.
