Cathey Picks the Stangs; Ready to Get to Work

OGDEN, UT. – The Ogden Mustangs, proud members of the United States Premier Hockey League, are excited to announce the signing of Darrien Cathey for the 2021-22 season.

Cathey (Boise, ID) was a standout performer from the first shift during the Ogden Tryout Camp in July. He is also one of a trio of former Wenatchee Wolves 18U AAA players to make the Mustangs roster this season. This will be his first season at the junior level and he prepares for another big step in his hockey career.

"My summer has been really productive. I’ve been hitting the gym almost every day and getting on the ice as much as possible to prepare for the season. I’m excited to see my hard work pay off."

The Idaho-native is listed at 5-10, 175 lbs and plays a very quick game when he is on the ice both mentally and physically. As if the Mustangs weren't a fast team already, Cathey brings another gear in the lineup that looks to be very dangerous heading into the new season. In 2020-21, he recorded 9 points in 38 games in 18U AAA. Cathey is hungry for the opportunity and a player to watch this season when he finally dons the red and blue.

"It was a pretty special feeling knowing that I was selected from that big of a group that attended the tryout camp. It was a really exciting weekend and a very competitive hockey camp. My parents and I were really impressed with what Ogden had to offer: Coaching staff, facility, returning players, and the program itself."

Being a 2003, Cathey has already flashed his brilliance on the ice and has plenty more to grow into as he continues to evolve his game. It's another exciting addition for Head Coach Kenny Orlando and he can't wait to see what his new forward does.

"Darrien was a player that stood out to us right away in camp. His skating ability and IQ with the puck separated him from many others. He is quick on his feet and we expect him to pick up the pace of play for the Mustangs forward group this season. We’re excited to get to work and push Darrien to his next level of play."

Already proving to have a no-quit, blue-collar attitude, Cathey embarks on a year with his new team that sees limitless potential. He and his teammates know the journey is long, but they are willing to go the distance in order to finish what they started last season. "I’m very excited to be a part of the Mustangs organization. My personal goals are to be a consistent player, both on and off the ice, and to work as hard as I can to better myself as a player and as a person in order to help our team. Our group is looking very promising this year and I believe we should take it one game at a time; work our hardest during practices, workouts and during games. If we do all of that, we should reach the goal of winning a championship.
